BEYOND THE GARDEN FENCE: ECOCRITICAL REFLECTIONS IN MRS. FRISBY AND THE RATS OF NIMH

This study aims to identify different ways nature is portrayed in the story and to uncover the environmental ideologies hidden in the text of Mrs. Frisby and The Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O’Brien. This study applies qualitative-descriptive method using environmental themes based on Greg Garrad’s theory. The result of this study shows that Mrs. Frisby and The Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O’Brien represents seven environmental themes; namely Pastoral, Wilderness, Apocalypse, Dwelling, Animals, Pollution, and The Earth. These findings allow us to unveil environmental messages; particularly in Ecological responsibility, Critiques in technology advancement, Harmony with nature, Anthropocentrism alongside Ecocentrism, and Environmental justice.
